MAMA Drawings, 2021 – Present

MAMA Drawings is a series that started in 2021 as a daily devotional drawing practice.

In the months after the pandemic lockdown my mother was diagnosed with a terminal illness. Although we lived near each other, the distance enforced on us by both lockdown and her compromised health prevented any in-person connection.

Finding these readymade targets at a local sporting goods store and feeling strongly that unconventional and exploratory modes of making were necessary in this time, I started treating the set patterns of the Score Keeper Shooting Targets as a responsive drawing practice- one that worked to solve, redact, and redirect the symbolism, language, and commerciality of these materials into something new- an offering of help and hope. They became shields. They became love letters.

During her prolonged illness I made approximately one MAMA drawing a day for her and as a means of small empowerment amidst a daughter’s inability to comfort directly.

In the years since her passing the project continues with broader but still pointed intentions of power, strength, and healing. Those featured here are a small selection of nearly 250 unique drawings.
